I spent $5,000 on Jellycat plushies — I sell my clothes to fund my obsession

Meet the woman addicted to Jellycats who has spent $5,000 on her collection – and sells her clothes on Vinted to fund her habit.

Megan Goldberger, 27, became obsessed with the plush toys after seeing influencers showing off their collections online.

She bought a Jellycat eggplant in February 2024 and has now amassed a collection of 150 — spending up to $5,000 on discontinued toys.

Megan says the Jellycats “heal her inner child” and her favorite toys include Flynn the dragon, a brown bunny called Miss Pecan, and an ice cream called ‘Mr Whippy.’

The toys have become a trend online and leads Megan to get trolls commenting it’s a “what a waste of money” and questioning why an adult is spending all their money on Jellycats.

Megan, an influencer, from Cardiff, Wales, said: “I’ve always loved teddy bears.

“I used to joke about selling my clothes for Jellycats but now I actually do.

“My Jellycats heal my inner child.”

Megan found a love for the plush toys after seeing them in a gift shop and she couldn’t help herself when she spotted the last Jellycat eggplant in her local independent shop.

She soon became obsessed and starting picking up Jellycats whenever she found any that looked cute and unique.

Megan also hunts out discontinued Jellycats such as finding an old edition bunny on eBay and spent $500 on the toy which would have previously retailed at $20.

Now she estimates she has spent $5,000 on her collection of 150 — which are currently on show in her bedroom.

Megan hopes to move out of her parents house and decorate an entire home in Jellycats.

She said: I can’t wait to move out of my parents’ house and be able to decorate my home in Jellycats — especially in the Christmas season.”

Megan uses Jellycats for her content creation but says she get a mixture of messages.

She said: “Some people comment that adults should not be collecting teddy bears.

“There are worse things I could be doing then collecting Jellycats.

“I will always clap back at a troll.

“You don’t have to watch. I do things that bring me joy.

“I don’t do drugs, I don’t drink alcohol excessively , and I don’t promote party culture to a predominately underage audience like many influencers do so I don’t see anything wrong with my Jellycat content.”

Megan, who has ADHD and anxiety, said her favorite Jellycat — A Dragon called Flynn — helped her fly for the first time in 18 months.

She said: “It was if a person was there with me.”

Megan hopes to keep growing her collection and has her eyes set on new drops as well many discontinued Jelly Cats like the rare sought after bunnies.
