"I don’t think he has a clue what he wants to do" - Alan Shearer criticizes Manchester United star's performance in 2-2 Tottenham draw

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has criticized Manchester United forward Benjamin Sesko after the latter failed to dispatch two big chances during their 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur. The two sides locked horns in the Premier League at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, November 8.

Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring in the 32nd minute to hand the Red Devils the advantage. Seeking to put the game to bed, Ruben Amorim opted to sub on Sesko in the 58th minute in place of Noussair Mazraoui.

However, the £74 million summer signing from RB Leipzig struggled to be clinical twice after taking too much time to shoot, despite being one-on-one with the keeper. To make matters worse, he also trudged off the field with a reported knee injury, reducing his side to 10 men.

Tottenham got back into the game via Mathys Tel (84') and Richarlison (90+1'). However, Manchester United had the last laugh after Matthijs de Ligt headed in at the back post in the sixth minute of stoppage time to secure a point for his side.

Despite this, Shearer wasn't impressed by Sesko's performance, telling BBC (via METRO):

"Sesko struggled again. He’s only scored twice in his 12 appearances and he came on today with just over half hour to go and had two really, really good chances and should have scored, to be honest. They worked it really well for him to get in. He’s either got to get his shot away early or he’s got to push that ball forward quicker. He’s not going to get that amount of time in the Premier League to work it back on his right foot."

He added:

"This one [Sesko’s second chance] is the bigger puzzle for me. I know he’s struggling for confidence but any centre-forward knows you cannot allow the centre-half to come back at you, you’ve got to get across Van de Ven. By that time he should have a picture in his head of where the keeper is and what he wants to do. I don’t think he has a clue what he wants to do because I don’t even think he even knows Van de Ven is there and chasing him." "I know he’s struggling with confidence but it’s a big ‘must do better’. No one likes to see him coming off injured and we hope his knee is okay but they are two chances you’d expect at that level that someone has to put away."

Sesko has scored two goals and provided one assist in 12 appearances across all competitions this season for Manchester United.

When will Manchester United next be back in action?

Despite snatching a late 2-2 draw against Tottenham through Matthijs de Ligt's header, Manchester United's struggles this season continued as they dropped points for the sixth time this season. They are currently eighth in the Premier League table with 18 points from 11 games, eight points behind leaders Arsenal.

Manchester United will seek to return to winning ways after the international break in their next fixture against Everton at Old Trafford (November 24). They then face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on November 30.
