Michigan football interim head coach Biff Poggi has raised serious concerns about the Wolverines’ roster ahead of the Citrus Bowl. Poggi took over the Wolverines as an interim coach following Sherrone Moore’s dismissal.

The coach’s primary task includes taking the team to the Citrus Bowl to take on the Texas Longhorns. However, the task might seem difficult for the coach given his uncertainty about the players he has available for the game.

Poggi was recently interviewed by The Stampede, a Texas-focused podcast. The coach touched on the state of his roster ahead of the bowl game against the Longhorns. He said:

“We will play hard. We’re coming. We will play hard. I don’t know how many we’ll come with, quite frankly. And I don’t know how well we’ll play. But we’ll play hard. And I want them to be able to say, the rest of their lives, ‘We played really hard against a great opponent, and we gave it our all, and when lesser men would have maybe not and probably will not be there on the 31st.’ So, you know, I’m thinking, honestly, there could be 25 guys, you know, possibly not coming back.”

Biff Poggi’s experience coaching Michigan

It is not Biff Poggi’s first stint as the Wolverines’ interim coach. He was the team’s interim head coach earlier in the season in the games against Central Michigan and Nebraska. He led the Wolverines to victories in both games. However, that stint wasn’t shrouded in as much controversy and uncertainty as this.

Moore, under whom Poggi served as an associate coach, was serving a two-game suspension for his part in a sign-stealing scandal. This time, however, Moore is gone for good after his dismissal for an inappropriate relationship with a staffer.

Biff Poggi had previously served as associate head coach under Jim Harbaugh before heading to Charlotte in 2023 to coach the 49ers. He left the program in 2024 after compiling a 6-16 record over two seasons.

The Wolverines are still on the search for a new head coach amid an investigation into the school’s athletic department. While top coaches like Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham have been linked to Michigan, Poggi reveals he’s also been interviewed for the job.

He said:

“I’m being considered. I’ve had multiple interviews. Nobody knows what’s going to happen.”

For now, he will focus on leading the team against Texas on New Year’s Eve.
