Objectively, Jerry Jones has enjoyed a successful career as the Dallas Cowboys’ owner, executive, president, and general manager.
In addition to winning three Super Bowls with the Cowboys, Jones earned the NFL Executive of the Year award in 2014 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2017.
However, the 83-year-old has made some questionable decisions during his lengthy tenure with the Cowboys, including parting ways with two-time Super Bowl-winning head coach Jimmy Johnson in 1993 and his mishandling of the Terrell Owens situation in Dallas in the late 2010s.
Regarding Owens, it’s no secret that he and Jones bumped heads during his three-year tenure with the organization, but that didn’t make his unexpected release from the Cowboys in 2009 any less shocking (Owens has previously stated that he never saw it coming).
In a recent interview with Action Network’s Kyle Odegard, Owens didn’t mince his words on the Cowboys’ controversial owner.
“I couldn’t care less about Jerry Jones,” Owens told Odegard Tuesday. I don’t concern myself with the Cowboys. “The Cowboys haven’t concerned themselves with me since I left there. That’s speaking of Jerry Jones or anybody really from that organization.”
“The way things ended there with the Cowboys, I couldn’t care less. I have nothing to say about them.”
It doesn’t take a genius to decipher that Owens isn’t on good terms with Jones and the Cowboys nearly two decades after departing Dallas. Owens clearly doesn't associate professionalism with the storied NFC East franchise, and it’s hard to blame him.
A heads-up about a career-altering decision regarding Owens’ future with the franchise would have been nice, but the 52-year-old receiver wasn’t fortunate enough to receive one.
Owens, who spent the first eight years of his career with the San Francisco 49ers, recorded three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons before wrapping his Hall of Fame career with the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals.
As things stand now, it doesn’t appear that Owens and the Cowboys/Jones will ever rekindle their damaged relationship, and Owens is perfectly fine with that.
