The San Antonio Spurs are way ahead of schedule when it comes to competing for a Larry O'Brien trophy. All of that is because of how Victor Wembanyama came into the league and just started ravaging everyone in his path. His seasons will only get longer because of a constant pursuit of a championship and deeper runs in the postseason. This means NBA-accredited hotels will also hilariously hate to see him coming. It's because Wemby altered how lodging was ran since getting drafted back in 2023.
How does Wembanyama fit in an NBA-accredited hotel bed?
The short answer is he does not. Hotels that have been partnered with NBA teams need to prepare something special when the Spurs and Wembanyama come into their town. Bill Simmons outlined how this hilariously changed lodging logistics in the past three seasons, via The Bill Simmons Podcast on The Ringer.
"Teams carry extenders for hotel beds for the tall guys. Wemby has a custom extender, that's what I found out. So, they have these cupboards. They don't want these guys to be sleeping badly, so they have extenders," Simmons said while laughing.
Usual beds in hotels can go up to a king size, 80 inches, which roughly only accommodates someone who is about seven feet. The Spurs organization has to haul around an extender which could at most be as long as 20 more inches. Notably, Shaquille O'Neal slept on a Texas King size when he still played in the NBA which measures at about 72 inches in width and 98 inches in length.
Nowadays, hotels which NBA teams usually stay at have custom 92-inch mattresses to accommodate huge players like the Spurs superstar. All of these customization and sacrifices to haul extenders on the road do not go in vain. The Spurs are currently second in the Western Conference standings after having won 50 of their last 68 games. Wembanyama is a big factor in that and they are now just two games back in notching the best record in the league over the Oklahoma City Thunder.
It won't take much time until these hotels that the NBA has partnered with just expand their mattresses to a little bit over 100 inches because more tall stars are making their way into the league.
