Coco Gauff continued her encouraging run on clay as she progressed to the semifinals of the Italian Open.

A finalist at the recent Madrid Open, Gauff defeated teen sensation Mirra Andreeva 6-4, 7-6 (5) in Wednesday's quarterfinals. With this win, the American is confirmed to take over the World No 2 ranking from Iga Swiatek at the beginning of next week.

The tournament in Rome is the last of the WTA 1000 events on clay before the French Open and the top players will be looking to build momentum for the major.

Joining her in the semifinal is fellow American Peyton Sears. The 23-year-old edged Elina Svitolina in tense three-set battle to set up a final four clash against 2024 French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini.
