Two softball state champions will be crowned in New Mexico on Saturday.
The New Mexico Activities Association wraps up its 2025 softball state tournament with the Class 4A and 5A championship games, each taking place in Albuquerque at the University of New Mexico Softball Complex.
In Class 4A, Silver - the top seed - takes on No. 3 Lovington, with Lovington needing to win twice to grab the title.
Silver has been dominant in each of its three wins at state to reach the championship round, defeating St. Pius X, 11-1, in the first round. The Fighting Colts then downed Aztec, 7-1, and Artesia, 5-1, in the winner’s bracket final.
Lovington lost its second-round game at state to Artesia, 7-2, before winning three straight games to make its way out of the consolation round - the last two by a run apiece. After edging Aztec, 1-0, the Wildcats then survived a slugfest with Artesia in the rematch, prevailing 11-10.
Then in Class 5A, the top two seeded squads face off, as No. 1 Centennial (Las Cruces) faces No. 2 La Cueva (Albuquerque).
Centennial’s Hawks have scored a total of 29 runs in each of their three wins at state. That included a 4-0 win against La Cueva in the winner’s bracket final, meaning Centennial needs to win just once to capture the crown.
La Cueva’s Bears forced a rematch with Centennial with an 18-2 win against Las Cruces to get out of the consolation bracket. The Bears will have to beat Centennial twice in order to win state.
