How Titans' Cam Ward might be making $70M WR signing look like a bust

There is a lot of work to do to get the Tennessee Titans back to playoff contention. One of the most important things is to continue to surround Cam Ward with the right pieces on offense.

The running back room could use some help; the offensive line is still questionable, and there's plenty of room for improvement at tight end. Wide receiver is one area where they actually invested quite a bit this offseason.

Carnell Tate is a fun young player worth being excited about. But for Wan'Dale Robinson, things are not going well. As Bleacher Report's Alex Kay questioned, Robinson might already be a signing the Titans are coming to regret, thanks in part to Cam Ward.

"Robinson was supposed to be a safety valve for up-and-coming quarterback Cam Ward, but the pair can't seem to get on the same page," Kay writes. "... it's obvious that there is a glaring lack of rapport between Robinson and Ward right now."

The Titans' offense through the first two weeks of the season has left a lot to be desired, as they've really not put up impressive numbers, nor proven to be able to consistently move the ball.

In two games with the Titans, Robinson and Ward have linked up just six times on seven targets for only 47 yards. His yards-per-reception is down to 7.8, the second-lowest mark of his career, and well below the 11.0 mark he set last season.

Robinson caught 92 of 140 targets a year ago with the New York Giants under Brian Daboll, going for 1,014 yards and four touchdowns in the process.

This season, the volume is much lower than expected, especially for someone who got such a large deal from the Titans over the offseason.

There are obviously plenty of reasons for the early-season struggles from Robinson and the Titans' offense as a whole, but one of the most glaring issues for Robinson is his lack of connection with Ward.

They're not linking up as one would expect. Tate, Robinson, and Calvin Ridley are the best WRs on this roster, but Elic Ayomanor is seeing plenty of work through the early portion of the season.

Robinson, meanwhile, has played just 67% of the snaps, much lower than the 91% snap share he had a year ago and the 76% snap share he had in 2024.

The 5-foot-8 wide receiver is not seeing the field as much as he should be, especially for someone making as much as he is right now.

That, combined with a lack of rapport with Ward, as Kay highlighted, might have the Titans already starting to regret their $70 million payday for Robinson this offseason.
