How Philadelphia Phillies are impacted by new MLB salary cap

1 hour ago 3

The Philadelphia Phillies are one of Major League Baseball's biggest spenders. While they aren't spending as much as the Los Angeles Dodgers or the New York Mets, John Middleton has spent a fortune on this roster.

So, with the looming CBA talks between MLB and MLBPA, the Phillies' future could be a lot different depending on the outcome of the proposed salary cap.

According to ESPN's Jesse Rogers, the first number came in, and unfortunately for the Phillies, it is going to pose a bit of an issue. Rogers reports the ceiling is at $245.3 million, which is much lower than the Phillies' current payroll.

How Phillies would be impacted by MLB salary cap

The Phillies' current payroll, according to Spotrac.com, is at a whopping $313,871,502, which is a good bit more than the $245.3 million cap presented by MLB.

The difference here for the Phillies is a huge $68.5 million. This means that, if this salary cap were to be passed by the MLB and MLBPA, then the Phillies would need to find a way to shed $68.5 million from their payroll.

Freeing up such money isn't actually out of the question for the Phillies, as they won't have the $19.2 million from Nick Castellanos, for the $18 million from Taijaun Walker on their books next season.

Alec Bohm is a free agent and costs $10.2 million, and Edmundo Sosa's $4.4 million is also slated to come off the books. All four combined would free up around $51.8 million.

It's going to be a lot of money to clear still, even after those players aren't on the books, but that's only if the proposal from MLB stays at $245.3 million.

There's still a lot of negotiating left for this upcoming CBA, so the Phillies might not have nearly as much money to clear to be under the cap presented by MLB.
