How newly-acquired Rams cornerback Roger McCreary may be used vs Saints

The Los Angeles Rams made a move for their secondary before the November 4 deadline and added the services of Roger McCreary. The Rams added another Quentin Lake-like chess piece that they can move around in the secondary between slot and outside corner.

This is how they could be using him for the rest of the season, and his first big test will be against the New Orleans Saints.

How the Rams plan to use McCreary will most likely be the obvious, putting him in the best possible situation answer, but don’t be surprised if this weekend you don’t see Roger moving around and being tested in different roles, especially opposite Rashid Shaheed and Chris Olave.

Head coach Sean McVay spoke about the trade in an interview posted on the Los Angeles Rams YouTube channel.

“You lose Akhello, he’ll be back at some point, Darious Williams got banged up a little bit, we will see what his status looks like for this week,” McVay said.

“Part of it was more the result of some of the current circumstances of our back end and our corner position in particular.”

This current Rams secondary competes with their corners playing in a rotation that’s totally matchup dependent, using Emmanuel Forbes, Kobie Durant, and Darious Williams.

McCreary comes in as immediate CB2 and a bona fide starter on the outside if needed, especially if Darious Williams is banged up.

The Rams don’t want a ‘bleep show’ situation with Williams, like the Vikings are going through with Carson Wentz. So keeping up with injuries is paramount for their chances of winning the Super Bowl.

When they play the Saints, Rams fans should be excited when they watch Roger play on the outside. His physical bump-and-run play style can be the difference in timing for Olave and slowing down Shaheed from being able to make a play deep.

It also helps that they named Tyler Shough the starter per Adam Shefter, and he didn’t look particularly great against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He is a very good corner that may not have the stardom of some of the other players, but his play should do the talking, and he should dominate the Saints this weekend.
