On Thursday night, Luka Doncic went down with a hamstring injury during the Lakers' game against the Thunder.
With the postseason less than a couple of weeks away, the timing of this injury has fans concerned about Los Angeles' title hopes.
His availability/health come playoff time is a concern, but his injury also has major implications on several award races going on in the NBA.
Recently, the NBA implemented a rule that requires players to play at least 20 minutes in 65 regular-season games to be eligible for award considerations (two-game exception if they played 15-20 minutes).
The difference between being eligible and ineligible for awards this season might be heartbreaking for Doncic, as if the season ended today, he'd fall one game short of reaching the 65-game requirement.
The Lakers have already clinched a top-6 spot, so the play-in tournament is out of the picture for them, meaning no matter the severity of Doncic's injury, he may have just played his last regular-season game, with just a handful of games left.
Doncic is arguably having one of the best seasons of his career and was in the mix for several awards.
Some could argue Doncic wouldn't have won MVP due to other players having just as quality a season, but it might not matter anyway if he falls short of the 65-game minimum.
He won't be eligible to make an all-NBA team if he misses the rest of the season, which is a category he would have likely been a part of.
We won't be able to come to any exact conclusions until we receive the official injury update/status for Doncic, but with what happened and how the rules are, it's not looking great for Doncic in terms of taking home any awards or hardware from this season.
This season, Doncic is averaging 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists.
