How Giants' catcher depth chart is impacted by Patrick Bailey trade

The San Francisco Giants are struggling a bit this season, with the worst record in the National League West at 15-23.

Tony Vitello's squad is struggling enough this season that they've already begun to shift things around. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, they have traded Patrick Bailey to the Cleveland Guardians for the No. 29 pick and Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson.

Following that trade, the Giants' depth chart at the catcher position is going to look a bit different going forward. However, it's still a solid group for the Giants this season.

Explaining Giants depth chart post-Patrick Bailey trade

After parting with Bailey, the Giants now have three different catchers who could get opportunities at the Major League level this season.

Of these three options, Daniel Susac, a rookie catcher who caught fire to begin his career, is the one likely to be starting often for the Giants.

He's currently on the injured list with an elbow issue, though he's in the middle of a rehab assignment, and could return to play in the near future. Susac has a .478 average and five RBIs this season in 11 games and 23 at-bats this season.

Currently slated to start for the Giants is another rookie in Jesus Rodriguez, who is hitting .455 with one homer and two RBIs in just four games played in his big league career.

Rodriguez is likely to remain the main catcher until Susac comes back, in which case the Giants will have a fascinating decision on their hands.

Rounding out the room as some veteran depth is Eric Haase, the 33-year-old who is in his eighth MLB season, and has a .300 average with one RBI in four games and 10 at-bats this season.

While the Giants' catcher room will look a lot different with Bailey gone, their offense will take a big step forward, as Bailey's .396 OPS was among the worst marks in the entire league this season.

Even though the Giants lost a Gold Glove catcher, the combination of Susac, Rodriguez, and Haase makes for a strong catcher depth chart in San Francisco following this unexpected trade with the Guardians.
