How Eagles' Quinyon Mitchell could be affected by $135M Christian Gonzalez extension

The Philadelphia Eagles are in the business of keeping their homegrown players under contract well beyond their rookie deals. Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter just received massive new extensions.

Next in line for a mega-deal are the. 2024 draft picks in Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, and Jalyx Hunt. Of those three, Mitchell is easily the biggest one to watch.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer named Mitchell as the player most likely to be impacted by the recent extension for Christian Gonzalez at $135 million over four years. The reason why is simple: Howie Roseman is likely to work quickly to get a deal done.

"As for who could be affected by Gonzalez's deal, I'd say the first player that comes to mind is Eagles corner, Quinyon Mitchell..." Breer writes. "... Philadelphia is generally hyper-aggressive in taking care of its own, so Mitchell's deal could come quickly after the coming season ends, as he becomes eligible for a second contract."

The Eagles are going to be eligible to sign those 2024 draft picks to extensions following the 2026 NFL season. That means it will be their first chance to sign Mitchell to a long-term deal.

Considering how difficult it is to find good cornerbacks, Mitchell shouldn't be going anywhere any time soon. Roseman should fork over a massive new deal for the All-Pro cornerback.

The four-year, $135 million extension for Gonzalez with the New England Patriots is one that the Eagles and Roseman will likely need to beat to sign Mitchell long-term.

It's a $33.75 million per-year deal, so the Eagles could offer a $34 million, four-year deal worth a total of $134 million and potentially get a contract done. But that's if there isn't another new CB extension done between now and then.

Even if there isn't, Mitchell might seek even more than that. At pretty much any somewhat reasonable price, Mitchell will be worth extending.

Breer believes such an extension could come quickly, and considering how Roseman likes to sign his own players to long-term deals, it would hardly be a surprise if this Gonzalez deal spurred Roseman into agreeing to a deal soon.

Mitchell, Roseman and the Eagles will have to wait until after the 2026 season to make any serious efforts to pursue a long-term deal. But once the year is over, Eagles fans should keep a close eye on Mitchell rumors, as a deal could come very soon.
