How controversial red card in USA vs. Mexico U20 final led to Americans losing CONCACAF championship

Mexico handled business in front of the home fans in the CONCACAF U20 final on Sunday, defeating the United States 2-0 at Estadio Azteca to capture a second consecutive title.

A controversial call in the first half might have been the difference in the match.

A red card shown to USA's Chris Applewhite forced the Americans down to 10 players in the first half. With the U.S. already trailing 1-0, the path to an equalizer became much more difficult.

Here's why some fans think the call was botched by the referee on Sunday.

USA vs. Mexico U20 red card controversy

Applewhite received a straight red card late in the first half of Sunday's match for a slide tackle that didn't appear to make any contact with Mexico's Hugo Camberos.

Officials might have thought Applewhite's slide was excessive, but a red card without any contact — Camberos jumped over Applewhite's legs — surprised the United States and left the Americans shorthanded for the remainder of the match. 

Facing a team that had only allowed one goal in the entire tournament, the United States faced a daunting task while down to only 10 players. Not only did the U.S. never score an equalizer, but Mexico would push its lead to 2-0.

Mexico prevailed in Sunday's CONCACAF U20 final, getting two headers out of Cristobal Alfaro to win a second consecutive CONCACAF U20 championship.

The win puts Mexico in the 2028 Olympics, which the United States automatically qualifies for as a host country.
