The Washington Capitals still don't know what Alex Ovechkin plans to do about retirement.
They aren't waiting around to find out, though. On Tuesday, they traded for Jordan Kyrou from the St. Louis Blues.
ESPN's Emily Kaplan reported the deal: Kyrou goes to Washington for Connor McMichael, the No. 16 overall pick and a prospect.
Kyrou is a center, not a winger like Ovechkin, but this still feels like it has some implications on what comes next.

How Jordan Kyrou trade might matter to Alex Ovechkin
The basic thinking here is actually just that the Capitals wanted to get their current roster better.
If Ovechkin retires, they'll replace a bit of his firepower by having Kyrou.
But having Kyrou could also appeal to Ovechkin as another reason to come back and keep playing.
Kyrou is coming off a quiet season -- he had 18 goals and 28 assists (46 points) in 72 games.
But this is a 28-year old who has 378 career NHL points in 488 games -- 168 goals and 210 assists.
The Blues had a down season overall in 2025-26, and Kyrou was a part of the downturn.
With a change of scenery, and especially if he gets to play with Ovechkin, Kyrou should be well-positioned to take a step back in the right direction with the Capitals.
