All eyes were on Lindsey Vonn as the United States legend took to her skis on Sunday in Italy at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Vonn crashed, but the U.S. medal chances didn't. Breezy Johnson made sure of that.
On what was a difficult day for U.S. skiing fans, with Vonn wiping out on her downhill run and being airlifted away from the course, Johnson was golden.
Johnson had already completed her run before Vonn and done it in 1:36.10.
Just the sixth competitor, Johnson watched as 30 more athletes tried to ski a faster time than her. None could.

Johnson wins the first medal of these Games for the U.S., and it's a gold.
She's the second American woman to win gold in the Olympic downhill, after Vonn.
Johnson's win held on by just .04 seconds.
It was a long road back for Johnson, who had a knee injury that kept her out of the 2022 Beijing Olympics. She was then banned for 14 months for missing three anti-doping exams.
Johnson was the world champion a year ago, showing her ability, and now she has the Olympic gold medal to show for it.
