How are Chiefs dealing with no Mahomes? Coach reveals 'crazy business' side

2 hours ago 1

The dust is officially settling on Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his ACL injury suffered against the Los Angeles Chargers.

With Patrick already having surgery in Dallas and now beginning his rehab, the Chiefs have a small matter of playing the next three games without their star quarterback.

But there is also another thread to pull here as it pertains to Mahomes' injury -- he's not in the building.

Having had No. 15 walking the halls for years, now, as the season draws to a close, head coach Andy Reid has detailed what it has been like the past few days without Patrick in the building.

“We love having him around,” Reid said. “Him missing, everybody feels for him, at the same time, it's a crazy business that way, moves on, Minshew steps up, and now he has an opportunity to play. Thank goodness he's here. He's got experience, and the guys trust him, coaches trust him. We all love Pat. He's a special kid.”

When will Mahomes be back?

Well, it depends on who you ask.

Some think a full 12 months given the significance of Patrick's injury, others think nine months, and  Rick Burkholder, the Chiefs Vice President of Sports Medicine and Performance, said it could even be a month or two later or earlier than that.

So, the timeline for Mahomes' return is whatever you want it to be at this point.

Is Week 1 a fair assumption? For some, yes. Others think November is a more realistic return date.

Either way, Mahomes is on the road back to being healthy. The surgery is done, and now the rehab can start.

As for when No. 15 will be back? Well, that's anyone's guess.
