A pedestrian was killed in a shocking late-night hit-and-run in East Los Angeles Monday night — and the driver didn’t just flee the scene behind the wheel, but allegedly jumped out and ran off on foot.
The carnage, which was caught on video, unfolded on Olympic Boulevard near Arizona Avenue, with California Highway Patrol officers responding to the incident around 11 p.m. When they arrived, officers found a man lying lifeless in the roadway and the white sedan that struck him was beaten up and abandoned nearby.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, claiming the driver had initially pulled over after the sickening impact — but instead of helping, the motorist allegedly bolted and vanished into the night.
In the video, other cars were seen narrowly missing the pedestrian before he was struck.
“I saw the bumper flying off and the white car over there, they pulled over, and the driver got out and ran across the street,” Lin Hirayma, who saw the tragedy, told CBS news. “The white car over there, they pulled over, and the driver got out and ran across the street.”
The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel.
Photos from the scene showed the mangled remains of the white vehicle’s front end, a grim testament to the force of the collision.
