New York Governor Kathy Hochul is suspending state liquor laws so bars can open early to broadcast the Olympic men’s gold medal hockey game between the United States and Canada — but not in New York City.
“I have directed the State Liquor Authority to suspend enforcement with respect to alcohol service hours tomorrow between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m.,” Hochul said in a press release.
However, Hochul goes on to specify that the order applies only to areas of New York that are not under a state of emergency because of the coming blizzard.

“This will apply only in areas not under a State of Emergency, as our top priority remains keeping people in communities impacted by the blizzard safe and off the roads,” she said.
The men’s US and Canadian hockey teams are set to face off on the ice Sunday at 8:10 am Eastern, and the game will be broadcast on NBC.
The governor said she was easing enforcement on bars and restaurants “so U.S. hockey fans can gather to watch the Olympic gold medal game.”

“It’s what every American and Canadian grows up watching, this is the pinnacle of the sport. This is as good as it gets. A rivalry that it’s good as it gets,” Team USA player Matthew Tkachuk said after America’s stunning 6-2 victory over Slovakia.
The US men’s team is going for their first hockey Gold since the “Miracle on Ice,” where the US beat the Soviet Union at the 1980 winter games in Lake Placid.
“I still remember watching the 1980 game as a college student at Syracuse University, working in a pizza shop. The whole place stopped and watched together. I hope a new generation of New Yorkers gets that same moment tomorrow. Go U.S.A.!” Hochul said.
Canada is skating into the finals with multiple high-profile injuries, including captain Sidney Crosby and to defenseman Josh Morrissey.
However, Canada team coach Jon Cooper has refused to rule out either of them playing in the Olympic finals, telling NHL.com “we’ll see.”
“I watched [Crosby] skate today. I haven’t spoken to him yet. We’re going to meet tonight and have a determination of what’s going to happen tomorrow,” Cooper told NHL.com.
The women’s Olympic hockey team took home the gold from their Canadian counterparts Thursday, beating them 2-1 in overtime.
