Hilary Duff Details Throwing Husband Matthew Koma's Phone in a Bush During “Drag-Out Fight"

Hilary Duff is coming clean—and then some.

When the 38-year-old returned to music with the release of Luck… or Something she also gave fans an inside look at her innermost world, from past romances to her marriage to Matthew Koma and her strained relationship with her family, including older sister Haylie Duff.

So, it should come as no surprise that when Hilary sat down to talk with Call Her Daddy’s Alex Cooper, she kept that degree of candor going.

Among the primary topics was her relationship with Haylie, whose estrangement from she sings about in her new song “We Don’t Talk.”

"I think I get bitten in the ass sometimes when it doesn't unfold the way that I would like I was hoping," Hilary admitted when reflecting on mending broken relationships in her life. "But I think that, I think one thing that I appreciate about myself is that I'll always try and I like always try to keep a heart open and like a heart forward and try."

And while Hilary has previously kept the details of her and Haylie’s relationship quiet, her new album felt like the right moment to share her real experience—and as it turns out, people could relate.

While talking with Alex, also reflected on the public's response to some of the other tracks on her new album, such as "Roommates" and the much-talked about single “Mature.”

At the time of the latter song’s November release, fans speculated the lyrics—which reference a relationship Hilary engaged in with a much older man—could have been about Joel Madden or Leonardo DiCaprio. (While Hilary and Leo never dated, to the public’s knowledge, fans began to speculate over the lyrics in the song that read “Very Leo with your Scorpio touch,” with Matthew only fanning the rumor flames.)

But for Hilary, her music just serves as an outlet.

"The song is meant to be polarizing," she shared of "Roommates," adding, "it's not meant to like be raunchy or like get attention because of what I'm saying. Like it's a plea. And I think that's relatable to women. And so, you know, I have never given head in the back of a dive bar, sadly. There's always time. But you get to take like lyrical liberties when you're writing a song and you're creating art."

But while Hilary—mom to son Luca, 13, with ex-husband Mike Comrie, as well as daughters Banks, 7, Mae, 4, and Townes, 21 months, with Matthew—remained coy about some of the more lurid details about her past, the Hilary Duff alum didn’t hesitate to share more insight into some of her other relationships, including her early romance with late ex Aaron Carter.

"I got invited to his birthday party," she explained of their meeting, noting of his Lizzie McGuire appearance, "there was like some cute sparks, and then I think I pitched the idea of having him come on the show, and then we started dating pretty soon after that."

How Hilary Duff Really Feels About Toxic Mom Group Drama

After Ashley Tisdale made waves when she penned an essay about experiencing "toxic" mom group drama, many speculated that Hilary was part of the circle the HSM actress was referring to. (Hilary's husband Matthew Koma also entered the chat shortly there after to come to her defense.)

Now, Hilary is ready to come clean about her perspective.

"I felt really sad," she said during the Feb. 25 episode of Call Her Daddy. "I honestly felt really sad. I was pretty taken aback and felt just sad. I love, I have so many groups of friends. I'm so lucky. Motherhood has brought on, like I have my core group of friends who have been my ride or die for 20 years, 10 to 20 years, and I have tons of different groups of mom friends because I have four kids, you know? So, I think I just was like, 'Whoa.' It sucks to read something that's not true and it sucks on behalf of like six women and all of their lives."

How Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan Made Up After Feud

The Lizzie McGuire alum, whose feud with Lindsay was sparked over them both dating Aaron Carter, admitted she intentionally crashed the Freaky Friday premiere in 2003 to spite her "childhood nemesis." However, their once hostile relationship is now water under the bridge.

"But now it's so many years later, like who cares?" she shared. "It does not matter. Also, Lindsay came up to me at a club once and was like, 'Are we good?' And I was like, 'We're good.' She was like, 'Let's take a shot.' I was like, 'OK.'”

Where Hilary Duff Stands With Sister Haylie Duff Amid Estrangement

Hilary shared insight into where she stands with older sister Haylie after the release of her song, "We Don't Talk," but noted that she has tried to approach relationships in her life straightforward before finding an artistic route.

"I think there was no way for me to make a record after 10 years and not dig into what those 10 years have looked like, you know?" Hilary explained, "and the big things that have happened and that affect me and that make me who I am. And unfortunately a lot of that has been like not great stuff and that's life."

"People have known everybody in my life since I was on Lizzie McGuire, you know," she shared. "They know my mom, my sister, and my dad. Like we have a small family. People are interested in that for some reason. And it's really sad, you know, kind of like where we are right now...And scary to share it because of like the internet, but important for me, like I'm just saying how it feels for me."

What Led to Hilary Duff's Divorce From Mike Comrie

After Hilary welcomed son Luca with then-husband Mike Comrie in 2012, the couple would separate nearly two years later. It was a decision, as she explained, came naturally.

"It just got to a point where it wasn't gonna...I think he was good with it because I was like, 'Here's this, this, this,' like, you know, and he was like, 'Great,'" she noted. "This was before conscious uncoupling was a thing and my parents went through such a bad divorce that calling it made it really painful, but like, we're not together anymore. So obviously it was bad enough that it wasn't working."

"And that was a really tough call because we had a not even 2-year-old kid," she explained. "And I remember doing everything in my power to like, have it be peaceful and have us hanging out and spending time together. And every time we would, you know, trade, it wouldn't just be like a drop off pickup situation. We would like go to the park and hang or go have a meal. It was really important to me to do it in a way that Luca could feel like comfy."
