A recent high school graduate died in a car crash while driving to college for orientation weekend to meet her new roommates, according to her heartbroken mother.
Rylie McGill, 18, was heading to the University of Alabama at Birmingham [UAB], where she had been accepted on a full-ride scholarship, when her car went off the roadway and smashed into a tree on I-65 near Bay Minette around 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, WALA reported.
McGill, a graduate of Blount High School in Mobile County, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Riley McGill was on her way to freshman orientation when she crashed and died.McGill’s grieving mom, Kristin Carroll, said her daughter was so excited when she left the house early that morning to go to orientation, meet her new roommates and prepare her dorm room for this fall.
“She had so many things that she wanted to do. Her biggest goal was she wanted to be a journalism professor. She wanted to write. She just loved writing. She loved helping people,” Carroll told WALA through sobs.
McGill leaves behind five brothers who are now grieving a sister they loved deeply.
McGill was captain of her high school’s academic time and was a brilliant student in the classroom, her mother said. She was also involved in several school clubs and organizations.
McGill received a full-ride scholarship to the University of Alabama at Birmingham.McGill’s friend Zulma Molina, who had just graduated with her weeks ago, said she still “cannot process” what happened.
“Rylie was an incredible person. She cared for every single person that was around her, even if she didn’t know you personally or not a lot, she would still try to find a way to make sure that you were happy,” Molina said.
