Amid rising gas prices, now averaging above $6 per gallon in California, commuters may find some relief, if they’re willing to go a little out of the way to find it.
At the Morongo Travel Center in Cabazon, gas prices are well below the national average: $4.99 for regular, $5.29 for mid-grade and $5.49 for premium. Diesel is also priced low at $6.79, while the state average for diesel now sits well above $7 per gallon.
The California Post have reached out to Morongo for comment on the low prices and what factors influence its pricing strategy.
California’s tribal casinos often leverage their sovereign status to undercut the competition at the pump.
Amid rising gas prices, California commuters may find some relief — if they’re willing to travel far to find it. APBecause these stations sit on federal trust land, they frequently bypass the local and state sales taxes that burden off-reservation retailers.
This unique tax jurisdiction allows tribal operators to reduce overhead, often resulting in prices 15 to 30 cents lower than the state average.
Beyond tax advantages, casinos use cheap fuel as a high-octane marketing tool. Many operate gas stations as “loss leaders,” accepting lower profit margins on fuel to drive traffic toward their gaming floors.
There are currently 23 tribal gas stations in California. However, no single tribe has the same tax agreement. Some tribes have different treaties with the state, which allows for different tax structures compared to other casinos, according to a local tribal spokesperson reported previously by ABC 10.
Beyond tribal casinos, some other locations — not a drive of two hours from the city — also have relatively lower prices.
Some savvy commuters are finding significant relief in neighborhoods like East Hollywood.
At the intersection of Melrose and Normandy avenues near the 101 Freeway, the Sinclair station is offering regular unleaded for $4.97 per gallon, while the station directly across the street holds steady at $4.99, KTLA reported.
The catch? You have to pay in cash.
These prices represent a massive savings of over a dollar per gallon compared to the regional average.

This price gap has turned certain local stations into high-traffic hubs for drivers willing to go the extra mile.
Motorists from as far as Torrance and Corona are flocking to these specific East Hollywood pockets to fill up before their commutes, noting that even “low” prices in other suburbs are still hovering around the $5.25 to $5.59 range, according to the network.
With the county average jumping $1.30 in just one month due to the ongoing conflict in Iran, these local “deals” have become essential survival tools for residents’ weekly budgets.
To cope with these soaring costs, which are nearing the all-time California record of $6.49, drivers are getting creative.
Many are shifting their shopping habits to big-box retailers like Costco, using the GasBuddy app to track real-time fluctuations, or even dusting off motorcycles and mopeds to avoid taking their cars.
