Did the Miami Heat already win the offseason following their blockbuster trade for 10-time All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo?
Not yet, but the deal (Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks, one pick swap, and one second-round pick to the Milwaukee Bucks for Antetokounmpo) certainly made Miami better in late June.
Why not follow up the massive deal with a big-time signing for a generational star forward and four-time Finals MVP who’s on the Los Angeles Lakers' radar? Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd thinks it’s far from a nonsensical concept.
“He (LeBron James) likes the warm weather, he’s a golfer now,” Cowherd said Friday. “You can golf year-round in Miami… Miami is on fire. It’s a fun city, he’s been there. It works. Miami with Giannis, Bam (Adebayo), and (Bobby) Portis, what do they need?”
“Shot creation…. Scoring and facilitating is what MIA will be struggling with. LeBron, Giannis, Bam, Portis, (Andrew) Wiggins, Bronny (James), that’s a squad.”
Among all the potential landing spots for James this summer, the Heat are arguably the least likely. While negotiations with the Lakers haven’t gone smoothly thus far, returning to Los Angeles for his 24th NBA season is still a relatively strong possibility for James.
If the Lakers re-sign James and decide they want to use his new contract to land a new starting center, there are rumors that Los Angeles could partner to complete a James-centered sign-and-trade for Jarrett Allen.
An alternative option for the 22-time All-Star would be teaming up with Curry, the most gifted shooter in NBA history, in the Bay to compete for the end-of-career title with the ‘Olden Warriors’.
That doesn’t mean the Heat are out of the running for James, per se, as he would certainly give the franchise a massive offensive boost. However, as it stands now, it would likely take somewhat of a miracle to bring the four-time NBA champion on board.
