The Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics have shown interest in acquiring forward Trey Murphy III from the New Orleans Pelicans this offseason.
Murphy would immediately fill a glaring need on both Golden State and Boston's rosters: wing play. Murphy is one of the best 3-and-D players in basketball, averaging 21 points per game on nearly 38% from three while being a valuable defender due to his versatility on that end.
With the Pelicans likely headed for a much-needed roster retooling this summer, Murphy was involved in a ton of trade rumors. However, it sounds like the 26-year-old could be running it back for another season in New Orleans after all.
Pelicans not showing much interest in moving Murphy
According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, the Pelicans are still listening to offers for Murphy and fellow forward Herb Jones.
However, New Orleans isn't actively shopping them, and they've rejected every offer to date.
"Sources we’ve consulted have been consistent in conveying that the Pelicans have been mischaracterized as a team shopping [Trey] Murphy and Herb Jones," Fischer wrote. "Willing to listen to offers for their two in-demand swingmen? True. Turning down all those offers to date? Also true."
Additionally, the Pelicans' asking price for Murphy is reportedly three first-round picks, per Fischer (H/T NBA Central on X), which is a steep ask for a player at this stage of the offseason after the draft.
Murphy would elevate the Warriors and Celtics' ceilings by adding more offensive firepower, floor spacing, and tenacious defense. However, it looks like New Orleans won't trade the veteran unless they get a premium package in return.
Instead of gutting their future draft capital and roster to trade for Murphy, Golden State and Boston should look elsewhere to address their need for wing depth. Both teams could circle back to Murphy if New Orleans is willing to engage in trade talks and lower their asking price, but for now, the former first-round pick seems to be staying put with the Pelicans.
