One of the top free agents remaining on the market is veteran DeMar DeRozan, who has not been on a true contending team for quite some time. DeRozan spent last season with the Sacramento Kings and will be playing for a new team during the upcoming season.
The Kings have started moving on from several veteran players, and DeRozan became one of the latest veterans to find himself looking for a new opportunity.
“"The Sacramento Kings have waived DeMar DeRozan, the team announced Monday, making the six-time All-Star one of the top free agents on the market. DeRozan had a partial guarantee on his contract for next season, but he and Sacramento worked on his release to allow him to find a new home. Multiple contenders are expected to have interest in the veteran guard," ESPN wrote.
One destination that has been mentioned since the beginning of free agency is the Miami Heat, who have been connected to DeRozan for years beyond just this offseason.
“Miami Heat have been a Derozan landing spot for years now, there's been so much connectivity between him and the Heat and I do think the Heat seem to be the most likely scenario for DeMar DeRozan right now…Miami is probably his best bet…those other spots really don't have spending power," The Stein Line's Jake Fischer said.
While Miami remains a strong option, the Washington Wizards, Denver Nuggets, and Cleveland Cavaliers have also shown interest in DeRozan as they look to add more offensive firepower.
“As ESPN's Shams Charania reported recently, DeRozan has generated interest from the Heat, Nuggets, Cavaliers and Washington Wizards, serving as a high-profile name, proven scorer and durable option for several teams in need of offensive punch at a team-friendly price,” ESPN wrote.
This is an interesting situation for DeRozan, as he now has the opportunity to join a legitimate contender during the later stages of his career. The 17-year veteran would provide a major boost to nearly any of these teams, with the Wizards being the only exception due to their current rebuilding situation.
DeRozan has earned $305 million in contracts throughout his NBA career. The Heat appear to be the favorites at this point, with the Cavaliers also remaining in the mix. This is a race that could come down to the final moments before a decision is made.
