A 38-year-old star's credibility has been questioned by a veteran. WWE has been under fire from fans and experts for some of its booking decisions lately, and it doesn't seem that tide will turn any time soon.
At Saturday Night's Main Event, Gunther made John Cena tap out in The Champ's retirement match. With this win, the former World Heavyweight Champion has now retired two icons in a matter of months, having beaten Goldberg in his farewell WWE match.
Many fans see this as the promotion's way of building Gunther as a top heel before a rumored showdown with Brock Lesnar. Speaking on the latest Coach and Bro edition, Jonathan Coachman brought up this sentiment to former WWE writer Vince Russo.
However, Russo dismissed the idea of the 38-year-old star beating Lesnar, saying his defeats to Sami Zayn and Jey Uso don't make him a credible threat.
"What would possess you to think that Gunther can beat Brock Lesnar when he lost to Sami Zayn? Like seriously, the guy lost to Sami Zayn. He's going to beat Brock Lesnar? The guy lost to Jey Uso. He's going to beat Brock Lesnar? In what universe is that going to happen?" he said.Russo said that a believable loss wouldn't have hurt him, but these were "unbelievable" losses that bring Gunther's credibility into question.
He lost the Intercontinental championship to Zayn at WrestleMania 40 and then tapped out to Jey Uso to lose the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 41.
WWE could be planning Brock Lesnar's retirement next year
Ahead of his retirement match, John Cena, in an interview, suggested that Lesnar might be retiring at SummerSlam next year, which will be held in Minnesota.
This led to speculation around the future of The Beast in WWE. In the recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (WON), Dave Meltzer revealed an update on the situation.
He wrote that though he cannot confirm an exact date for Lesnar's retirement, internally his name has been discussed when it comes to retirement runs of stars like AJ Styles and Chris Jericho, if he signs with WWE.
