As Australian batter Usman Khawaja announced his international retirement with the final Ashes Test in Sydney to be his farewell outing, we look back at one of his most interesting anecdotes about Indian star Virat Kohli. While it is well known that the duo share an excellent relationship, the former recalled his first meeting with the legendary Indian batter after the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The Aussie left-hander opened up on how he would be Kohli's designated driver when they first met with the former nearing the end of his teenage years.

"I was driving around the bus where he (Kohli) was going and he couldn’t drive so I would DD for him a few times, and became good mates with him," said Khawaja (via First Sportz).

Khawaja also received a signed jersey from Kohli as a memento at the end of the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and revealed why.

"All the way back then so I felt like it might be one of the last times I play against him, probably would be the second last time if we play him once more so I got a nice momento for that," he stated.

Khawaja and Kohli have gone at it in several high-octane Border-Gavaskar Trophy affairs between Australia and India over the past decade. While the former led all scorers in the 2023 series, the latter led India to their first-ever Test series win on Aussie soil in 2018/19.

Usman Khawaja will retire as one of Australia's most accomplished batters

Usman Khawaja will retire as one of only 19 Australian batters to have amassed over 8,000 international runs. The 39-year-old has scored 8,001 runs thus far across formats at an average of over 42, including 18 centuries, in 136 outings.

Khawaja is Australia's 15th highest run-getter in Tests with 6,206 runs at an average of 43.39, including 16 centuries, in 87 games. The veteran batter played a vital role in Australia's one and only World Test Championship (WTC) trophy in 2023.

Despite playing only 40 ODIs, Usman Khawaja boasts impressive numbers with an average of 42 and a strike rate of over 84. The southpaw's final international game, the Sydney Test, starts on Sunday, January 4.
