Hawks pull trigger on Buddy Hield trade as roster overhaul continues

The Atlanta Hawks are reshaping their roster again, reportedly acquiring veteran forward Dorian Finney-Smith from the Charlotte Hornets in a multi-player trade.

Atlanta is sending sharpshooter Buddy Hield, guard Ryan Nembhard and cash considerations to Charlotte in exchange for Finney-Smith. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Hornets are expected to waive Nembhard following the deal.

The transaction also provides both organizations with additional financial flexibility. ESPN’s Bobby Marks reported that Atlanta creates a trade exception worth approximately $2.1 million, while Charlotte is expected to generate one valued around $4.5 million.

Hawks shake up roster again

Hield’s stay with the Hawks proved to be brief. Atlanta acquired the veteran guard as part of the deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Golden State Warriors. Hield appeared in only seven games for Atlanta last season before becoming part of another trade.

Known throughout his career for his perimeter shooting, Hield is scheduled to earn approximately $9.5 million this season. His contract also includes a player option worth slightly more than $10 million for the 2027-28 campaign.

Finney-Smith gives Atlanta an experienced, versatile wing who has built his reputation around defense, toughness and the ability to stretch the floor.

Charlotte acquired Finney-Smith from the Houston Rockets earlier this offseason. His time in Houston was disrupted after he missed the first two months of last season. The veteran has three seasons remaining on a four-year, $53 million contract, with the final year containing a player option for 2028-29.

Nembhard, meanwhile, arrived in Atlanta through the three-team transaction that sent Zaccharie Risacher to the Dallas Mavericks while bringing Luguentz Dort to the Hawks from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The 23-year-old Nembhard entered the NBA as an undrafted rookie with Dallas. He averaged 6.6 points and 5.3 assists while playing 19.5 minutes per game last season.

For Atlanta, the deal swaps Hield’s shooting for Finney-Smith’s defensive versatility as the Hawks continue adjusting their roster.
