Hawks predicted to cut ties with Jonathan Kuminga for $24.3 million reason

The Atlanta Hawks acquired Jonathan Kuminga from the Golden State Warriors, knowing all along they'd have a decision to make this offseason.

Kuminga has a team option in his current contract.

If the Hawks accept it, Kuminga will play the 2026-27 season for Atlanta on a $24.3 million contract.

If they decline it, Kuminga becomes a free agent.

So what will they do? The Athletic's John Hollinger predicts they'll decline the option and either renegotiate with Kuminga or let him walk.

That would set up Kuminga for another dicey offseason after it look a long time last summer to come to an agreement with the Warriors.

"The 'What is Jonathan Kuminga actually worth?' debate enters Year Five!" Hollinger writes. "Kuminga showed some value as a bench scorer in Atlanta last spring, but BORD$ still values him as a high-end reserve, with his $9.4 million valuation falling well short of the contract dollars. I could see the Hawks picking up the option to use his contract in a trade, but it’s more likely that they decline it and either re-up at a lower number or move on."

Kuminga has such clear natural talent in some regards, but it hasn't resulted in NBA consistency up to this point.

Even with the Hawks, he had multiple big moments and impressive games, but he didn't put it all together, either.

Atlanta has other players who require a lot of the basketball, so Kuminga couldn't be much more than a bench spark for them.

Maybe the Hawks decide they want another year of him to see if he can grow.

Or maybe they've seen enough and, like Hollinger anticipates, they don't pick up the option.
