GrabAssist allows passengers who need extra mobility assistance to book rides with trained drivers
About two weeks ago, Grab rolled out its GrabAssist feature in Malaysia. It’s a dedicated service designed to support passengers who require extra mobility and accessibility assistance, including Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens, and users of personal mobility aids.
The feature was officially launched by YB Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development on Dec 3, during the opening of the ASEAN Disability Forum Conference 2025, coinciding with International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
But how exactly does GrabAssist work, and how does it make travel easier for those who need extra support?
Inclusive rides with trained drivers
GrabAssist is currently available only in the Klang Valley, with nearly 100 driver-partners trained by certified care service providers.
Their training prepares them to handle mobility devices such as wheelchairs and walkers and to provide professional, empathetic support. Each driver-partner is also equipped with GrabAssist kits, including in-car communication flip cards to assist and communicate with passengers more effectively.

GrabAssist also uses vehicles from the Plus range, which offer larger boot space to accommodate foldable wheelchairs and other mobility aids, ensuring a comfortable ride.
For passengers with communication disabilities, the in-app chat feature allows them to send special instructions to their driver-partner, or they can use the communication cards provided in the vehicle.
“At Grab, we are deeply committed to ensuring everyone can move about independently and conveniently,” shared Rashid Shukor, Director of Country Operations & Mobility at Grab Malaysia.
“We understand that there is always more work to be done in making our services truly inclusive. This initial step with GrabAssist helps us address key challenges for underserved groups, and we look forward to expanding our partnerships to bring even greater mobility to the broader community.”
Supporting inclusive economic opportunities
The GrabAssist initiative is also part of the company’s broader effort to foster inclusive economic opportunities.
Since 2018, the company has empowered over 3,000 PWD driver- and delivery-partners in Malaysia, and more than 5,140 across Southeast Asia as of 2024.
Grab plans to expand GrabAssist to other cities in Malaysia in the future. You can visit this page for more information on the feature.
