Giants' Rafael Devers question will determine so much in MLB's second half

Will the real Rafael Devers please stand up?

That's what San Francisco Giants fans everywhere are asking as the second half of the MLB season gets underway Friday.

The Giants pulled off what looked to be a heist when they acquired Devers from the Boston Red Sox in a shocking trade. Except, so far, Devers hasn't looked at all like himself.

With San Francisco, Devers is batting .202 with a .656 OPS.

That comes from a guy who even after this rough stretch is a career .277 hitter with an .855 OPS.

Something's gotta give.

Devers started the season 0-for-21 in Boston but, at the time of the trade, was up to .272 average and .905 OPS.

In 25 games with the Giants, Devers just hasn't found any kind of groove.

San Francisco is 52-45 despite Devers' slow start, but that's only good for six games back in the NL West (and 0.5 a game back of the Padres).

If Devers can get hot, the Giants can still make noise.

But if he hits at the Mendoza line the rest of the way, San Francisco's postseason dreams might be foiled before they get started.

The reality is the Giants have Devers for a long time. They need him to figure it out for the long haul more than they need him to just figure it out this season.

But in the near term, it'd be great to see Devers start hitting. If he stands up as his usual star self, the Giants can go on a serious run.
