Giants predicted to trade for $4.2 million All-Star, would be upgrade from Luis Arraez

The San Francisco Giants made a big move to upgrade at second base when they signed Luis Arraez, who brings a contact bat to their power-leaning lineup. However, Arraez is only on a rental, and they still don’t have a long-term answer to the position.

FanSided’s Mark Powell believes that the Giants could find their answer in a person they tried to trade for this offseason, in Washington Nationals All-Star CJ Abrams. Abrams is a shortstop, but he could easily slide to the other side of second base.

“CJ Abrams has been floated in trade rumors all winter long. I don't really get it, but I'm not the Washington Nationals front office. Abrams is just 25 years old and has a few years left on his contract. By all accounts, Abrams is an excellent teammate, and a player on the rise who plays a demanding shortstop position…A trade could be in Abrams' future, if not now then definitely at the deadline. There are plenty of teams that could come knocking, including the San Francisco Giants, who tried to trade for him this winter,” Powell wrote.

Last season with the Nationals, Abrams slashed .257/.315/.433./.748 with 35 doubles, 19 home runs, 60 RBI, and 31 stolen bases in 144 games played. Just the year before, Abrams earned his first All-Star nod when he was 23 years old.

Abrams would also be cheap, as he’s set to make $4.2 million this season, and still has two years of team control after that. Honestly, that’s a better deal than Arraez’s, and if the Giants can re-sign Abrams to a long-term deal, he could be Willy Adames’ successor at shortstop as well.

Hopefully, the Giants consider making a proposal for this trade soon, as if they want to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the division, they need all the help they can get.
