The New York Giants pulled off a tense overtime victory over the Houston Texans on Sunday, and running back Cam Skattebo got out of the doghouse with his performance.
Heading into this game, Skattebo was coming off a benching. Head coach John Harbaugh knew what he was doing, because he let him regain his starting status just in time for his breakout game.
During the Giants' 27-21 win over the Texans on the road, Skattebo carried the ball 17 times for 124 yards and a touchdown. His massive run in overtime ended up pretty much saving the game. So, this was easily the best game of his NFL career, and it came just in the nick of time.
New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh sent Cam Skattebo a message with his benching
Harbaugh benched the second-year running back last week for the team's game against the New Orleans Saints after he had four fumbles in his first five matchups of the season. One of those fumbles cost the Giants a win over the Washington Commanders in overtime in Week 5. So, Harbaugh played hardball and basically showed that he wasn't afraid to bench Skattebo or look for a replacement.
But Skattebo rose to the occasion. Ahead of the game, he expressed that he knew he would have to step it up and didn't take the chance for granted.
"Nobody's safe, it's as simple as that," Skattebo told reporters on Friday. "And I think when we go on the field, and we perform, if we're not performing, we understand there's a possibility of not being here. And if I don't perform, I know there's a possibility of me not being here."
That possibility just got a lot smaller, Skattebo. Just saying.
