Gervon Dexter to Atlanta: Why the Falcons may have just stolen a difference-maker

 The Atlanta Falcons entered the offseason determined to strengthen their defensive front. Their latest move could provide both size and proven production.

Atlanta acquired defensive tackle Gervon Dexter, adding a 6-foot-6, 326-pound interior defender who gives the Falcons another disruptive option up front.

Dexter, 24, arrives after spending his first three NFL seasons with the Chicago Bears. A second-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, Dexter developed into a full-time starter and combined for 11 sacks over the past two seasons. Last season, he started all 19 games for Chicago, finishing with 48 tackles, six sacks and two fumble recoveries.

The Falcons are betting that production can translate immediately.

Dexter has appeared in 49 of a possible 51 games since entering the league and has recorded 13.5 career sacks. His combination of size, strength and interior pass-rushing ability gives Atlanta another defender capable of collapsing the pocket and preventing quarterbacks from comfortably stepping up against pressure off the edge.

There is also familiarity behind the move.

New Falcons general manager Ian Cunningham was Chicago’s assistant general manager when the Bears selected Dexter in 2023. That connection gives Atlanta’s front office extensive knowledge of Dexter’s development and potential as he enters the final year of his rookie contract.

More importantly, Dexter addresses a major need.

Atlanta struggled against the run last season and has aggressively rebuilt its defensive line, trading for Maason Smith while adding Da’Shawn Hand and Chris Williams. Hand’s training camp leg injury, however, created additional uncertainty in the rotation.

Dexter immediately helps.

Defensive line coach Nate Ollie now has another proven interior pass-rusher to pair with Brandon Dorlus, LaCale London, Smith and Williams while Hand works toward his return.

With Jalon Walker out for the season and James Pearce Jr. facing a lengthy suspension, generating pressure from the interior becomes even more important.

Dexter isn’t simply another big body.

He’s young, durable and productive — and Atlanta believes he can make an already dangerous defensive front even deeper in 2026.
