Geno Smith has chance to turn Jets second act into something more — after first stint’s big what-if

There was Darrelle Revis, of course. After his tour through the wilderness with Tampa Bay and his stint on a duck boat in New England, Revis came back to the Jets to grand acclaim in 2015. He wasn’t quite the all-world corner he’d been the first time around, but he did make another Pro Bowl and help guide the Jets as close to the playoff sun as they’ve floated in a decade and a half. 

There was Laveranues Coles, who wasn’t quite the dynamo he’d been before his two-year exile with Washington but was still a fine, productive contributor in Act 2. Vinny Testaverde was summoned from his couch with the Jets quarterback room quickly evacuating in a lost 2005 season, and he won the 87th of the 90 games he’d win as an NFL QB. Antonio Cromartie was a two-timer, though Round 2 was much quieter (and less effective) than Round 1. 

The Jets have two such two-timers this year who are key components on both sides of the ball. Linebacker Demario Davis is actually a rare three-timer — drafted by the Jets in 2012, returning the first time in 2017, and now back again after a decorated time in New Orleans. He’s had an immediate impact on the defense. 

Then there is Geno Smith.
