From Micah Parsons to Maxx Crosby: Why it makes sense for the Cowboys to swap elite edge rushers

2 hours ago 2

The Dallas Cowboys are taking over the trade deadline headlines.

After a report from Trey Wingo, fans and analysts are theorizing that Jerry Jones and company could make a move for elite pass rusher Maxx Crosby. But didn't the Cowboys just move on from an All-Pro edge rusher a few months ago? Why would Dallas jump back in on an expensive contract at the position?

There's a few reasons why this move would make sense for the Cowboys.

Why the Cowboys moved on from Micah Parsons

For starters, let's revisit the haul Dallas received in the Micah Parsons trade.

Cowboys receive:

  • 2026 1st round pick
  • 2027 1st round pick
  • DT Kenny Clark

Packers receive:

  • Micah Parsons

After months of tense, public contract negotiations, Jerry Jones chose to cut ties with the All-Pro defensive end. The Packers paid Parsons a record-setting 4-year, $188 million deal that put him at $47 million annually.

It's a deal the Cowboys were reportedly not willing to ink and that was the final straw that caused Parsons' exodus.

Jones made the argument that the money they saved not signing Parsons could be spread around the roster. So why would he acquire an expensive player like Crosby?

Why the Cowboys could acquire Maxx Crosby

Crosby, a four-time Pro Bowler, is on a Raiders team that is far from contending for a Super Bowl. Meanwhile, the Cowboys boast one of the NFL's best offenses and a defense with gaps across the roster. It's a seller-buyer relationship.

If Dallas could pull off a trade involving one of their first-round picks and a young edge rusher like Sam Williams, it would still leave them with one of the picks from the Parsons trade and a solid defender in Clark.

Crosby also has an annual salary of $35.5 million which is significantly cheaper than Parsons. Crosby set his career high in sacks in 2023 with 14.5. Parsons' career high is 14, also set in 2023.

Correction: Maxx Crosby signed through 2029. Crosby signed a 3 year, $106,500,000 contract this offseason with the Raiders, including $91,500,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $35,500,000.

If Dallas acquires Crosby, it will bolster their defensive line alongside Clark and Osa Odighizuwa while leaving additional cap room for other players.

There's no way to know for sure if this move will happen but it makes complete sense for the Cowboys to make a splash play at the trade deadline.
