(Bloomberg) — Chrystia Freeland is leaving her cabinet post as transport and internal trade minister to become Canada’s new special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced in a statement on Tuesday that she will take on the role while remaining a member of Parliament. He said Freeland is “uniquely positioned” for the job given her work as a former minister of finance, foreign affairs and international trade.

Freeland had returned to Carney’s cabinet after publicly quitting ex-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s front bench and precipitating his departure from politics. She said in a separate statement she does not intend to run in the next election.

“After 12 fulfilling years in public life, I know that now is the right time for me to make way for others and to seek fresh challenges for myself,” she said.

Freeland praised Carney as a “unifier in a time of crisis.” She lost a contest to lead Canada’s Liberal Party to Carney earlier this year, after Trudeau resigned following Freeland’s accusations that the former prime minister was too focused on costly “political gimmicks” amid plunging poll numbers.

“I am not leaving to spend more time with my family or because the burden of elected office is too heavy to bear. For me and my wonderful husband and children, public service has been a privilege and not a sacrifice,” she said.

The Globe and Mail was first to report Freeland’s departure from cabinet and new envoy position. Freeland is also of Ukrainian heritage and speaks the language.
