Former UConn offensive lineman Keith Gray was found guilty Friday of leading a $328 million fraud scheme, according to the Department of Justice.
He was convicted by the jury of conspiracy to defraud the United States, five counts of violating the Anti-Kickback Statute and three counts of money laundering.
He potentially faces 10 years in prison per count.
After graduating from UConn, Keith Gray spent time with the Panthers and Colts’ organizations. Getty ImagesGray’s sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge after “considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors,” the DOJ said.
He was the mastermind behind billing Medicare “unnecessary genetic tests designed to evaluate the risk of various cardiovascular diseases and conditions.”
Gray had no medical need for the tests, but he racked up $54 million in return, the DOJ added.
Gray used the money to buy expensive vehicles, like a Mercedes-Benz SUV worth more than $154,000.
He attempted to conceal the payments from Medicare by using “sham contracts and invoices” that matched the amounts he received in his illegal scheme, per the DOJ.
He also claimed others were for nonexistent software and loans.
Gray played at UConn from 2004-08, becoming a team captain and starting all 13 games at center in 2007, one of three Huskies linemen to do so that year.

Gray wasn’t selected in the 2009 NFL Draft and later joined the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent for that season.
He was later released, joined the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad, before getting the same result there.
Before bowing out of professional football, he also spent some time in the UFL. Gray then became the owner of Axis Professional Labs and Kingdom Health Laboratory in Texas, where he’s originally from.
On Friday, though, Gray’s luck finally ran out.
