Former NBA All-Star loved what he has seen from Darryn Peterson so far in Summer League

The Utah Jazz were elated to have the second overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft because it meant they were assured of a superstar-level talent. From the draft class, scouts and experts knew there were three high-level talents, and the Jazz were assured of at least one of them.

Since the Washington Wizards selected AJ Dybantsa as the first overall pick, the Jazz were left to select Darryn Peterson. It was a fantastic decision because he looked like a superstar in the first few games of this year's Summer League circuit.

Joe Johnson is impressed with Darryn Peterson's Summer League so far

In his first game of the 2026 NBA Summer League, Peterson has shown he is ready to be the go-to star for the Jazz. He scored 28 points in a thrilling opening game against the Atlanta Hawks.

It was further proof that Peterson is ready for the limelight because he was showcasing his well-rounded ability. Not only was he attacking the rim with his athleticism, but he was also generating perimeter shots and creating for his teammates.

While it was an amazing performance, there were some issues, like his eight turnovers. Despite those issues, former NBA All-Star Joe Johnson was ecstatic with what he saw from the second overall pick.

"For me, when I watched Darryn Peterson today, how he ran the P&R, how patient he was. He wasn’t sped up. When he did speed up, he got to whatever he wanted to. He didn’t seem uncomfortable to me out there. I think he has so many tools in his toolbox. The sky’s the limit for this kid," Johnson said about Peterson on Nightcap.

Now, Peterson has proven that he is ready to be the go-to guy. The Summer League will continue to have opportunities to prove himself, but the first glimpse was already a good look for his future stardom.
