Former Jets head coach Adam Gase gets unexpected NFL coaching update

The New York Jets have struggled to find a long-term head coach for a while now. Currently, Aaron Glenn is on thin ice after just one season.

While he's not one-and-done, if 2026 goes poorly, his tenure might be over. While it would be a very short stint, it wouldn't be the first time in the last six years a coach lasted two seasons. Adam Gase also lasted just two years, and since then, he hasn't been in the NFL.

But according to a report from Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, Gase might be returning to the NFL this season with a possible connection to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Ex-Jets head coach Adam Gase drawing NFL interest from Chargers

"Former Jets and Dolphins head coach Adam Gase emerged as a possibility to be hired by the Chargers in an offensive assistant role, sources tell @CBSSports," Zenitz reports.

Gase joining the Chargers would be a fascinating turn of events, as he would get to pair up with Justin Herbert and Mike McDaniel in L.A. on what could be one of the better offenses in the NFL next season.

The former Jets head coach lasted just two seasons in New York, finishing with a 7-9 record in 2019, and then a brutal 2-14 record in 2020.

During both of his seasons with the Jets, they were ranked last in the NFL in yards, and were last in points in 2020, while being second-to-last in points during the 2019 season.

The Jets' offense during his stint as head coach was the worst in the entire league over those two seasons.

The now 47-year-old coach hasn't been in the NFL since he was fired by the Jets in 2020, and now, six years later, he might be returning to the league in an assistant role with the Chargers.

Nothing is official yet, but Gase is strongly linked to the Chargers and an NFL return in the wake of this report from Zenitz.
