Forgotten Colorado Buffaloes QB predicted to start again, end NFL indifference after benching by Deion Sanders

We may not have seen the last of Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Kaidon Salter starting under center during the 2025 season.

Sports Illustrated’s Harrison Simeon deemed Salter one of the four Buffs under the most pressure from head coach Deion Sanders. After Ryan Staub squandered the QB1 role during a 36-20 loss to the Houston Cougars on Friday, at least according to Simeon, Salter’s chance is to get back in Coach Prime’s good graces but also get NFL scouts fixated on his draft stock.

Simeon predicts Salter regaining Colorado’s QB1 role before the Buffaloes’ BYU Cougars matchup on September 27 from Folsom Field because of what he does against the Wyoming Cowboys in Week 4.

“The current Colorado plan at quarterback is unclear, but after a disastrous day for Ryan Staub, Salter may get the mulligan he desired. He didn't play poorly in his game-and-a-half under center, but left much on the table,” Simeon wrote.

“If Salter expects to end the indifference that surrounds his current NFL status, he must be ready to meet any moments that will come his way. His mental fortitude throughout the Buffaloes' quarterback carousel must endure.

“It wouldn't be a shock if Sanders trusts him once Big 12 play ramps up against the BYU Cougars on Sept. 27, so a strong tune-up game against the Wyoming Cowboys this Saturday would be vital.”

Salter’s dual-threat ability makes him an intriguing late-round NFL draft flier, much like his fellow Liberty Flames signal-calling alum Malik Willis, the Green Bay Packers’ primary backup for Jordan Love, was.

Salter just needs to bulk up if he wants to ever have a serious NFL chance. And before those conversations, he needs to prove at CU over the next few weeks that linking him to the pros isn’t a fool’s errand after a pair of mediocre outings.
