Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrell Green’s playing dreams are still alive.

The 66-year-old two-time Super Bowl champion is taking part in team trials this weekend in California with hopes of making the USA Flag Football’s national team ahead of the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Germany.

If all goes well, Green, who retired from the NFL in 2002, would receive an invite to the team’s training camp next month.

“There’s nothing like getting on that field and competing on behalf of this country,” Green said in an Instagram reel posted to USA Football’s page. “And then topping that off standing on that top podium getting that gold [medal]. I’ve done it in track in college and high school. I’ve been in Super Bowls, this is the granddaddy of them all. Don’t feel sorry for me, don’t feel bad for me. I’m a competitor just like everybody else and I’m gonna give it my best and walk away with my head up, either way.”

Green is one of many athletes hoping to play for Team USA, with the debut of Olympic flag football coming in Los Angeles in 2028.

Given his age, it’s incredible Green made it this far with the team’s rules on how can qualify for the trials.

“Darrell qualified through our digital combine. He’s later in his career than the other trials participants, but his testing results were impressive,” Callie Brownson, USA Football’s senior director of high performance and national teams, said. “Our coaches and staff felt he deserved a closer look … He’s a rare athlete who has stayed in shape and is ready to compete this week.”

Green played 20 seasons in the NFL, winning two Super Bowls with Washington.

Dominant in pass coverage, the 1983 first-round pick had 60 combined regular season and postseason interceptions throughout his career.

He was enshrined in Canton, Ohio in 2008.
