The Florida Gators are aiming to become back-to-back national champions, just like UConn did the year before them. In today’s era of college basketball, achieving that goal requires not just maintaining talent, but also adding key pieces through recruiting and the transfer portal. However, Florida suffered a significant loss for next season when Denzel Aberdeen entered the transfer portal in a surprising move.
There was initial confusion about why Aberdeen chose to leave, but it was later reported that his decision was financially motivated—a common theme in today’s NIL-driven landscape. Jeff Goodman broke the news about Aberdeen’s reasoning for entering the portal.
“Denzel Abderdeen's departure had little to do with the addition of Princeton transfer PG Xaivian Lee and was far more about finances/NIL,” Goodman wrote.
Aberdeen’s father criticized head coach Todd Golden following his son’s commitment to Kentucky, implying that Golden never gave his son a real opportunity.
“He hasn’t really shown what he can do. You could see spurts of it at Florida and even previously, but he wants a coach who believes in him,” his dad said.
Despite the loss, Golden remains optimistic. If forward Alex Condon returns, the Gators could have one of the most imposing lineups in the country.

“We hope we get his running mate Alex Condon back and if we do we’ll play really big this year,” Golden said. “We’ll start Haugh at the three, Condo at the four, and one of the other bigs at the five.”
Golden also responded to the departure and the criticism with a composed but confident statement.
“Losing Denzel Aberdeen was tough, but we wish him nothing but the best. I'm pretty confident we can find somebody to take that spot. The Gators are gonna have a really good group again next year,” Golden said.
Golden’s confidence in his recruiting ability is well-founded, especially after landing Xaivian Lee from Princeton. Even without Aberdeen, the Gators are positioned to make another national championship run.
