Flames' MacKenzie Weegar gets surprise trade update before NHL deadline

1 hour ago 3

The Calgary Flames have had Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman's names come up plenty in trade rumors.

MacKenzie Weegar, though, is a newer one.

The defenseman is still under contract for a long time, and so even for a rebuilding club, he wouldn't seem like the guy that would get dealt.

TSN's Nick Kypreos is hearing that there is buzz around Weeger, though.

"MacKenzie Weegar is a very interesting name to watch here," Kypreos writes. "With right-handed defencemen in such high demand, teams are calling about him. Weegar has five years left on a contract paying $6.25 million against the cap, but he has a no-trade clause until after next season, when it changes to a 10-team no-trade list."

It sounds like the Detroit Red Wings may be leading the charge here.

"Again, the Red Wings come up here as a possible landing spot, as they would very much like to try and shore up their top four," Kypreos writes. "The Ottawa Senators are also interested in a right-handed defenceman and would hate to see Weegar go to an Atlantic Division competitor."

Weegar, 32, may not be a great player by the end of his current deal, so there's some risk to acquiring him.

But he's well thought of enough right now to consider him as a fit for a contender.

It might actually behoove the Flames to move off of his contract if they can, so stay tuned here.
