First padded practice for Super Bowl champion Eagles plagued by pre-snap penalties

The last time the Philadelphia Eagles were in pads before July 29, they were dominating the Kansas City Chiefs to the tune of a 40-22 victory in Super Bowl LIX.

The Eagles did not inspire many memories of that triumph in their first padded practice of the 2025 season.

In fact, a referee at the practice was overheard cracking jokes at the expense of the offense, according to Delaware New Journal Eagles insider Martin Frank.

After #Eagles 4th offensive penalty, ref says: “My arm’s getting sore. I haven’t thrown that many flags.”

According to Philly Voice Eagles insider Jimmy Kempski, the Eagles offense had "about a half dozen pre-snap penalties (estimated), and receivers weren't getting open down the field."

That's not to imply the Eagles' offense didn't have excuses. By noon, the temperature on the Eagles' practice field had a real feel of over 100 degrees.

However, the temps seemed to bother the Eagles' offensive players more than the defense.

"The defense very clearly won the day, just as they did on Monday," Kempski wrote.

There's likely no need to panic for an Eagles team that finished 14-3 last season before cruising through the playoffs by averaging 47.5 points per game in the NFC Championship and Super Bowl. The Eagles return plenty of offensive star power, including quarterback Jalen Hurts, who has a 49-27-1 career record as a starter, Saquon Barkley, who rushed for more than 2,000 yards last season, and top receivers in AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith.
