The homestretch to the Iowa high school baseball regular season is here, as postseason district brackets for Classes 1A and 2A have been released by the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

Iowa is the only state in the U.S. that still plays baseball - and softball for that matter - in the summer months.

The 1A and 2A state baseball tournaments are scheduled for July 21-25 in Carroll from Merchants Park.

Opening round games in 1A and 2A districts will take place Saturday, July 5. Teams will progress through the bracket until reaching the substate final where district champions will square off for one of eight spots at state.

Brackets for the other two classes, 3A and 4A, will be released shortly. Those first round postseason games begin on Friday, July 11. The 3A and 4A state tournament this year takes place in Sioux City.

Favorites to make it through the 1A brackets and play in substate finals are Remsen St. Mary's and MMCRU in Substate 1, Saint Ansgar and Wapsie Valley in Substate 2, Kee and Mason City Newman in Substate 3, North Linn and Don Bosco in Substate 4, Sigourney and Moravia in Substate 5, Lynnville-Sully and Baxter in Substate 6, Martensdale-St. Marys and Lenox in Substate 7 and Coon Rapids-Bayard and Logan-Magnolia in Substate 8.

As for 2A, those favorites are Unity Christian and Forest City in Substate 1, West Lyon and Spirit Lake in Substate 2, Iowa City Regina and Grundy Center in Substate 3, Mediapolis and Dyersville Beckman in Substate 4, Chariton and Interstate 35 in Substate 5, Pleasantville and Anamosa in Substate 6, Van Meter and New Hampton in Substate 7 and Underwood and Tri-Center in Substate 8.
