Rory McIlroy is unquestionably one of the greatest players to ever play the game. The Irishman became professional in 2007, and since then, he has won 29 PGA Tour events, including five major championships. He has also finished at the top of the Race to Dubai rankings six times. In recognition of his contributions to the game, the DP World Tour recently named an award after McIlroy.

The tour announced a "Rory McIlroy Award," which will be given annually to golfers who do well in all four PGA circuit majors. While McIlroy is also an active golfer but he is not going to win this award. NUCLR Golf reported this on their X account, as the post stated,

"🚨🏆⛳️ #NEW — The DP World Tour has announced ‘The Rory McIlroy Award’ which will be given to the top performing DPWT member across the 4 majors. McIlroy says it was agreed upon by everyone that he will be ineligible to win the award himself."

Interestingly, in the comments section of this post, fans began to point out that this is not at all a good move. Many fans complained that naming an award after a golfer who is still playing is a bad idea, and one fan even expressed regret for the golfer who received the award first. During the press conference of the DP World Tour Championship, Rory McIlroy explained how, when the idea of this award was revealed to him, he thought it was a bit too early. The golfer also stated that while it is early, he is not going to be playing for a long time, and it will be nice to have something named after him in the game.

The golfer stated,

"When Guy and Eric approached us about it after the Masters, my first inclination was, is it not a bit soon? Is it not a bit early? But the more I thought about it, and the more I'm not going to be around forever playing, so it'll still be amazing to have my name, after my playing days, my name associated with this tour."

Rory McIlroy also claimed during the interview that he hopes that the future generation will thrive a bit to earn this award.
