The 2026 fantasy baseball season has been riddled with chaos. With the vast number of starting pitcher injuries and superstar hitters not quite pulling their weight, fantasy managers have had a difficult time navigating the rocky terrain.
Nowhere is this chaos more evident than in the bullpen. The days of the locked-in, 40-save closer are largely gone. Instead, modern managers are increasingly inclined to play the daily matchups rather than relying on a single ninth-inning anchor.
The numbers tell the story of this relentless volatility. We have not even reached mid-June, yet a staggering 165 different relief major league pitchers have already accrued at least one save across. Bullpen committees have turned from a frustrating trend into the standard operating procedure.
For fantasy managers, this means security is an illusion, and the waiver wire is your most important tool. To survive, you must act with extreme urgency the moment a new reliever begins to secure saves, because waiting even 24 hours can cost you the category.
If you are looking to immediately acquire saves off your league’s waiver wire, your first target should be Royals right-hander Alex Lange. The Royals’ bullpen situation has been fluid, but Lange has seized the high-leverage opportunities with authority. Since moving into the closer’s role last week, he is a stellar 4-for-5 in save chances.
The underlying metrics prove this success is no fluke. Lange has allowed just one run over his previous 10 appearances heading into Friday, showcasing elite missing-bat ability with 12 strikeouts over his past 9 ¹/₃ innings pitched.
He is pitching with immense confidence and has earned the trust of his coaching staff, making him a must-add in all formats where he is still available.
For fantasy managers willing to take a gamble on a more speculative add, Athletics right-hander Elvis Alvarado is an intriguing option. Given the pitcher-friendly nature of his home ballpark and the tactical tendencies of manager Mark Kotsay, the Oakland ninth inning is ripe for a high-upside arm.

Alvarado features a blazing 98 mph four-seam fastball, a heavy sinker that clocks a similar velocity and a devastating 87 mph slider that consistently fools major league hitters.
His dominant arsenal has translated to a spectacular 11.57 K/9 rate, and he just notched his first save of the season. If he can string together a few more clean outings, he could run away with the job.

Navigating the closer carousel requires constant vigilance. Bullpen hierarchies change in the blink of an eye due to injuries, fatigue or simple underperformance. If you want to stay ahead of your leaguemates, you must make a habit of checking the boxscores every single day.
Do not just look at who got the save, look at who pitched the seventh and eighth innings, who entered the game when the heart of the order was up and who is warming up when the game is on the line. In the modern game, the next great fantasy closer is always just one boxscore away.
