Fans Slam Chris Broussard for Lumping ‘Constant Whiner’ JJ Redick With Erik Spoelstra Comparison

JJ Redick has come under fire as the LA Lakers are navigating a tough period. FS1 analyst Chris Broussard on Fox’s “First Things First” on Saturday compared Redick’s personality to Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra when he first coached the Big 3 in Miami.

“When you talk like that, you have to have the backing of ownership. When the big 3 first went to Miami they weren’t feeling Spoelstra. Part of it was he carried himself with a swagger they feel he didn’t earn. JJ Redick is now doing that”

Fans on social media reacted to Broussard’s comments. One fan on X (formerly Twitter) tweeted that, compared to Spoelstra, Redick comes off as a whiner.

@HeatCulture13 Spoe bookends any criticism with his failure and responsibility and doesn’t crash out at press conferences. Unless you have some alien system, players know the Xs and Os. Getting the team motivated and to try is actually the primary responsibility of a head coach.

@HeatCulture13 JJ Redick is being compared to all the great coaches and never won a playoff series.. 🤦🏾‍♂️ Anyway.. Chris Broussard is with Klutch sports..

@HeatCulture13 JJ hasn’t earned 💩! He’s all talk & still 💍less. 😆🤣

@HeatCulture13 Not even close comparison . Spo had already earned his stripes before big 3. Either way ownership backed spo and players had to adjust. It’s already been a couple years, I don’t see much change. The thing is spo ain’t afraid of “superstar-ism” while other coaches are

@HeatCulture13 That comparison is nuts. Spo was already a head coach in the league prior to the big 3 and was an assistant for the 2006 championship. LeBron had an issue with Spo, but part of the reason Lebron's greatest success came with the Heat is because Pat would tell him no.

JJ Redick was called out by fans and the media for his public criticism of the Lakers after the team’s third straight loss. Former player Kendrick Perkins, on Friday on ESPN’s “Get Up,” said that, as a coach, he’s too focused on blaming everybody else instead of taking control or providing leadership that immediately improves results.

Others argued that his public criticism would backfire. They believe that it will create tension in the team’s locker room and potentially weaken his authority. The Lakers started the season strong but have now dropped six of their last 10 games and were blown out 119-96 on Christmas by the Houston Rockets.

Redick and the Lakers (19-10) have a chance of getting their season on track when they host the Sacramento Kings on Sunday.

Former player John Wall calls on JJ Redick to exempt LeBron James from his criticism

Former Washington Wizards player John Wall on Saturday on Amazon’s “NBA on Prime” called on coach JJ Redick to exclude LeBron James from his criticism after the Lakers suffered another blowout loss on Thursday. Redick called out his team for not caring enough after they suffered their first consecutive loss of the season.

"I'm 23 years in,” Wall said. “I'm giving you the best I can, but be realistic, what more do you really expect of me? I'm 23 years in, you know what you're gonna get from me. I can't be the same LeBron that was in the passing lane or guarding the best player on the other end.”

The Lakers are 8-5 since the four-time champion returned from a sciatica injury. Redick raised eyebrows when he tied the Lakers' struggles offensively to James’ return. James is averaging 20.2 points this season, an improvement from the 16.5 points he averaged in November when he made his season debut.
