Fans plead for 94-win Ohio State ex-HC to replace Ted Carter after shocking resignation

With one week to go before the NCAA Tournament gets underway, the Ohio State Buckeyes are currently undergoing a significant change in leadership as university president Ted Carter resigned from his position Monday.

Carter, who has been part of academia since retiring from serving in the Navy in 2019, arrived in Columbus in 2023 following a stint at Nebraska.

In a press release from Ohio State, Carter shared a statement in which he told the University's Board of Trustees about an "inappropriate relationship" involving an unnamed person who was seeking "public resources to support her personal business."

"For personal reasons, I have made the difficult decision to resign from my role as president of The Ohio State University," Carter's statement read. "I disclosed to the board of trustees that I made a mistake in allowing inappropriate access to Ohio State leadership.:

Carter apologized further for the way the relationship ended and commended Ohio State as an academic powerhouse.

"I believe we have made much progress during my time at Ohio State, and I’m sorry I’m not able to remain your president longer," Carter added. "The students, faculty and staff at this university are among the very best in the world, and the Education for Citizenship 2035 strategic plan has Ohio State poised to succeed for years to come.

“I have enjoyed a strong working relationship with the board of trustees, and I’m grateful for their support and guidance," Carter concluded. "Lynda and I leave Ohio State with gratitude and appreciation for this wonderful community. It has been an honor to serve as this university’s 17th president, and we wish the university ongoing success.”

Almost immediately after Carter released his statement, Buckeyes fans, media, donors and the like appeared to agree on one thing: former Buckeyes football coach Jim Tressel is the right fit to replace Carter.

Tressel won 94 games at Ohio State, losing to the Michigan Wolverines only once over a 10-game period.

Cleveland.com's Stephen Means may have summed it up perfectly in a recent tweet.

"Ohio State University President Jim Tressel," Means tweeted. "Is it crazy or is it crazy?"

That question is up for debate, but the fans have certainly made their choice for Tressel abundantly clear: it's a resounding yes.

We'll see how quickly the Ohio State administration gets moving on an ideal replacement, as the academic year is slowly rounding the finish line.
